Poisonous double!

Identification characteristics of Blusher (Amanita rubescens) and Panther Cap (Amanita pantherina)

Almost every mushroom has poisonous and inedible doubles or confusion partners!

Since confusing the Blusher with the Panther Cap very often ends fatally, I will explain the identification characteristics here for you.

For many mushroom lovers, the Blusher is considered a delicacy, but I personally was not 100% convinced by its taste.

IMPORTANT!

The mushrooms presented and their description NEVER represent a food release, the mushroom portraits are NOT for identification!!!! Please always consult a mushroom expert if you cannot determine a mushroom 100%!
Even after my mushroom guides you will not be able to identify every mushroom 100%. This requires years of experience and practice!

Both mushrooms belong to the Amanitaceae Family

The Blusher (Amanita rubescens):

Identification features

Veil that leaves remnates
on the cap are always greyish or brownish and never pure white.
The hat colour itself varies from light to dark brown and usually has pink undertones.

The ring
is always grooved (gills imprints)

The edge of the hat
is almost always* smooth and ungrooved
*in very old and/or soggy specimens, the gills may push through at the edge of the cap. This is therefore not a reliable identification feature!

The gills and the flesh
are always white, but slowly redden when injured and at feeding mark.

Blusher

The base
is swollen and WITHOUT bands of scales but gradually merges into the stem.

The stem and the flesh
slowly redden in case of injuries or feeding marks. The Panther Cap remains pure white!

The Panther Cap (Amanita pantherina):

Identification features

Veil that leaves remnates
on the hat are always pure white.
The hat colour itself also varies here from light to dark brown, but without a pink undertone.

The edge of the hat
is always grooved!

The gills and the flesh
are always pure white and never redden!

Panther Cap

The base
HAS several scaly rings above the eggcup-like swollen base.

The stem:
is fine-scaled and the tip is usually easily separable from the cap flesh.

Identification mark panther cap
The ring
is always UNGROOVED (no reprint of the gills).
This feature is also uncertain, as in both fungi the ring is ephemeral!

For a safe determination, all characteristics must ALWAYS apply!
